LLB Law and Cymraeg Proffesiynol
About this course
Law and Professional Welsh is a degree that reflects the particular character of contemporary Wales as a bilingual nation with its own growing body of law and its own legal context. Since the creation of the National Assembly for Wales and the subsequent devolution of legislative powers to the Senedd, Welsh law has developed as a distinct and expanding area, creating genuine demand for lawyers who can operate both in English and Welsh and who understand the legal framework of a devolved Wales. This programme is designed to meet that need. At Aberystwyth this three-year full-time LLB programme prepares you for a Wales in which the ability to understand and speak Welsh to a high standard is an asset to employers across the public sector and beyond. You will study the core areas of law required for the qualifying law degree, including contract, tort, public law, criminal law, land law, equity, and trusts, alongside Welsh language study developed to a professional level of proficiency. The combination enables you to study law through the medium of Welsh as well as English, and to engage with the legal framework of Wales, including the expanding body of Welsh legislation, in a way that most law degrees do not address. Aberystwyth's bilingual campus provides a genuine Welsh-speaking environment that supports the development of your Welsh alongside your legal studies. Graduates are well placed for careers in legal practice in Wales, in the civil service and the Senedd, in Welsh medium education, in local authorities, and in any professional context where the ability to work in Welsh alongside legal knowledge is valued. Further professional legal training is required for those who wish to qualify as solicitors or barristers.
