BA Law and Spanish
About this course
Law and Spanish is a combination that works on two levels. Legally, it gives you a foundation in legal analysis and the study of legal systems, developing the rigorous argumentative and interpretive skills that all legal education demands. Linguistically and culturally, Spanish opens access to a vast world, one of the most widely spoken languages on earth with a presence across Europe, Latin America, and beyond. Together they prepare you for careers where legal understanding and cross-cultural communication in Spanish are both assets. At the University of Strathclyde, this four-year full-time programme combines study of law within the university's BA framework with the development of genuine proficiency in Spanish. You will study the principles and structures of legal thinking, including key areas of public and private law, while also developing your Spanish language skills and your understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures and societies. It is important to note that studying law within this BA programme is not the same as studying the LLB: this degree does not qualify you for entry to the legal profession in Scotland or England and Wales. Those who wish to qualify as solicitors or advocates need to follow the LLB pathway. However, the combination of legal analysis and Spanish gives graduates an excellent foundation for a wide range of careers where both are relevant. Graduates pursue roles in international business, compliance, legal publishing, government and civil service, international organisations, journalism, translation and interpreting, and commercial roles with Spanish-speaking partners or markets. Many also proceed to postgraduate study in law, Spanish studies, international relations, or area studies, and some choose to sit professional law examinations after their BA as a route toward legal qualification.
