About this course

Energy law is one of the fastest-growing and most consequential areas of legal practice. As governments, corporations and societies grapple with the transition away from fossil fuels and the development of renewable energy systems, the legal frameworks governing how energy is produced, traded, regulated and financed have become central to some of the most important decisions of our time. Studying law with a specialism in energy law at the University of Dundee gives you the rigorous legal training of an LLB alongside a focused understanding of this vital and evolving sector. This three-year full-time programme covers the foundations of English law, including contract, tort, constitutional law and equity, while building your specialist knowledge of how the energy sector operates and how law shapes it. You will examine the regulatory frameworks that govern oil, gas and electricity markets, the environmental law dimension of energy transitions, and the international dimensions of energy trade and investment. Careers sessions are embedded in the programme, so your professional development runs alongside your academic formation. A year abroad is part of the structure, extending your understanding of how other legal systems and jurisdictions approach energy regulation and giving you valuable international experience. Graduating from this programme, you will be well positioned to qualify as a solicitor or barrister in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, as well as in other common law jurisdictions. The energy specialism opens additional routes into the energy sector itself, in regulatory bodies, energy companies, government departments and international organisations concerned with climate, trade and investment. Legal practice in commercial, environmental or energy-focused firms is a common destination, and many graduates also move into policy, consultancy or academic research in energy law and regulation. The combination of broad legal training and sector-specific expertise is genuinely distinctive in the job market.
