LLB Law with International Relations with Foundation Year
About this course
Law with international relations is a degree that recognises the deep connections between legal systems and the international environment in which they operate. Law provides the frameworks through which rights, obligations, and disputes are managed within and between states, and it trains rigorous analytical and argumentative skills. International relations extends that framework outward, examining how states interact, how international law is made and enforced, and how the global political environment shapes the legal questions that matter most in practice, from human rights and trade to security and environmental governance. At the University of Surrey, this four-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who need to build their academic foundations before the main degree. The programme prepares you for the future by integrating digital skills and an awareness of how technology is reshaping both legal practice and international affairs. You will develop a thorough grounding in core legal areas, including contract, tort, constitutional, criminal, and public international law, alongside a substantive engagement with international relations theory and contemporary global politics. Surrey's commitment to preparing graduates for a changing professional landscape means the degree looks as much forward as it does at established doctrine. Graduates from law with international relations degrees are well placed for careers in legal practice, particularly in areas such as public international law, human rights, trade, and international commercial law. The international relations component also opens routes into the civil service, diplomacy, international organisations, NGOs, policy, journalism, and international business. Many graduates go on to complete the Legal Practice Course or Bar Practice Course to qualify as solicitors or barristers, while others pursue postgraduate study in international law, international relations, or global affairs.
