About this course
Law with Italian legal studies is a programme that combines rigorous training in Scots law with a focused engagement with the Italian legal system, the Italian language, and the civilian legal tradition that both Italy and Scotland share to a significant degree. Scots law is a mixed legal system with roots in both the Roman-Dutch civil law tradition and the English common law, making it intellectually related to Italian law in ways that a comparative approach makes vivid and illuminating. Students who study both systems come to understand law not as a set of fixed rules but as a set of solutions to universal human problems, solutions that different legal cultures have approached in fascinatingly different ways. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year programme is taught within one of Scotland's most distinguished law schools, providing the core curriculum required for admission to the Scottish legal professions alongside Italian language study and engagement with Italian private law, constitutional arrangements, and the European civil law tradition from which Italian law emerges. The Italian legal studies component develops your linguistic competence in legal Italian alongside comparative legal knowledge, preparing you for careers or further study that may involve Italian law or practice. Graduates may proceed to qualification as solicitors in Scotland through the Law Society of Scotland's training route, or as advocates through the Faculty of Advocates. The Italian legal studies component opens possibilities for practice, study, or legal work involving the Italian legal system, whether in Italy, in international arbitration, or in organisations that require comparative legal expertise. Careers in international law firms, European institutions, international arbitration, and academia are all open to graduates of this combination. Many graduates pursue vocational training or postgraduate legal study immediately after completing the degree.
