About this course
Law with modern languages is a degree for those who want to practise or work in law in an international context, combining rigorous legal training with the linguistic and cultural competence to operate across national boundaries. Legal systems differ significantly from one country to another, and anyone working in international law, cross-border commerce, human rights, or global organisations needs both a sound grounding in legal principles and the ability to communicate in more than one language. This combination prepares you for exactly that kind of career. At Bangor University this programme includes a foundation year, giving you four years in total and a supported entry into degree-level study for those who need it. The course also includes a sandwich year and work placement experience, which means your time at university integrates genuine professional development alongside your academic studies. You will study the core foundations of law, including contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, and equity, alongside your chosen modern language or languages. Language study is taken to a high level of proficiency, and you will develop cultural knowledge alongside linguistic skill, so you understand the societies whose languages you are learning. Graduates from law and modern language programmes are particularly attractive to firms and organisations operating internationally. Solicitors and barristers with language skills are in demand in large commercial practices, international law firms, European and international institutions, and NGOs working across borders. Beyond legal practice, the degree prepares you for careers in international business, diplomacy, compliance, trade, and policy.
