LLB Law with Russian
About this course
Law with Russian is a distinctive combination that prepares graduates for careers at the intersection of legal practice and the Russian-speaking world. Russian remains one of the most important languages in international affairs, energy, business, and geopolitics, even as the political relationship between Russia and the West has become significantly more complicated. A qualification in law combined with genuine proficiency in Russian opens possibilities in international commercial law, sanctions and compliance, arms control and security law, and the many contexts in which legal and policy questions involving Russian-speaking countries arise. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year degree develops your knowledge of Scots law in a comparative and international context alongside Russian language study that develops you to a level of real professional competence. The law programme covers the major areas of Scots law including obligations, property, public law, and criminal law, and provides the foundation for legal qualification in Scotland and, with further conversion, in other jurisdictions. The Russian component develops linguistic proficiency alongside engagement with Russian and post-Soviet culture, history, and political life, giving you the cultural understanding that pure language learning alone would not provide. Glasgow's law school is one of Scotland's most respected, and the university's language provision is supported by strong research expertise in Slavic languages and cultures. Graduates from this programme are well placed for careers in international commercial law firms, where Russian language ability alongside legal qualification is a genuine advantage in serving clients with operations or interests in Russia, the former Soviet states, or the broader Eurasian region. Roles in government, including the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, intelligence services, and regulatory bodies working on sanctions and compliance, draw graduates with this combination. International arbitration, energy law, and the legal dimensions of international security are further areas where Russian legal expertise is valued. Some graduates continue to postgraduate study in law, Slavic studies, or international affairs.
