BA Liberal Arts
About this course
Liberal arts is a model of higher education built on intellectual breadth and the integration of knowledge across disciplines. Rather than committing from the outset to a single subject, a liberal arts degree asks you to engage with the humanities, social sciences, and sometimes the sciences in combination, developing both range and depth. The idea is that some of the most important questions, and the most interesting careers, sit at the intersection of disciplines rather than firmly within any one of them. At the University of Exeter, this three-year full-time programme allows you to study widely before focusing on a major, giving you the flexibility to follow your intellectual curiosity while building genuine expertise in an area that matters to you. You will work across the humanities and social sciences, developing skills in critical analysis, research, writing, and the kind of broad contextual thinking that single-subject degrees rarely encourage. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, giving you professional experience and international exposure that significantly strengthen both your personal development and your employability. The combination of academic flexibility, practical experience, and global perspective is what makes the liberal arts model distinctive and increasingly valued by employers. Liberal arts graduates enter a wide range of careers, including business and management consultancy, public policy, journalism, education, international organisations, publishing, law, the charitable sector, and entrepreneurship. Employers who recruit broadly educated graduates often cite their ability to think across categories, to communicate with diverse audiences, and to adapt to new problems as key assets. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in a more focused discipline, using their undergraduate breadth as a foundation for deeper specialisation in areas such as law, history, politics, social policy, or cultural studies.
