About this course

Liberal arts is a degree philosophy that takes seriously the value of broad intellectual formation, developing students as thinkers and communicators across multiple disciplines rather than deep specialists in a single field. It has deep roots in the traditions of European and American higher education, grounded in the belief that the capacity to engage with diverse forms of knowledge, to think critically across disciplinary boundaries and to write and communicate well are among the most valuable outcomes of university study. A liberal arts degree is for students who are curious about many things and who want an education that reflects that breadth. At UEA, this four-year programme includes a foundation year, providing an accessible entry route into a degree that is particularly suited to students who may not yet know exactly where their intellectual interests lie or who need additional academic preparation before engaging with degree-level work. The foundation year gives you the opportunity to develop your academic skills and explore a range of subjects before committing to the main degree. Across the programme you will study across the humanities, social sciences and arts, developing your ability to read and analyse texts from different disciplinary traditions, to construct sustained arguments and to communicate your ideas clearly in writing. UEA has a strong tradition in the humanities and the arts, and its creative writing programme is internationally renowned, which gives a particular flavour to the liberal arts environment there. Graduates of liberal arts programmes move into a genuinely wide range of careers, including the civil service, journalism, education, law, publishing, arts administration, business, public affairs and research. The combination of intellectual breadth, analytical ability and communication skill that liberal arts develops is valued across many different professional contexts. Postgraduate study in almost any humanities or social science field is a natural option.
