About this course

Linguistics and philosophy are two disciplines concerned, from different angles, with the nature of language, meaning and mind. Linguistics analyses the structure of language systematically, examining how sounds, words and sentences are organised, how language varies across communities and changes over time, and how it is acquired and processed. Philosophy engages with foundational questions about meaning, truth, knowledge and the nature of mental states, often using the analysis of language as a central tool. Together they offer a rigorous and uniquely powerful approach to understanding how we communicate and how we think. At Nottingham Trent University, this part-time programme allows you to study alongside other commitments, and it includes both a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you the opportunity to put your skills into practice in professional contexts while you study. You will engage with core areas of linguistics, including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and sociolinguistics, alongside philosophical topics in the theory of meaning, philosophy of mind, logic and the philosophy of language. The programme trains precise analytical thinking, careful attention to argument, and the ability to engage with evidence and theory in a disciplined way. Graduates from linguistics and philosophy programmes move into a wide range of careers. Speech and language therapy, natural language processing, artificial intelligence, education, publishing, journalism, law, human-computer interaction and the civil service all provide routes for people whose training has given them a deep understanding of language and reasoning.
