BA Linguistics with Modern Language with Intercalated Year
About this course
Linguistics with Modern Language is a programme that combines the scientific study of language as a phenomenon with the practical development of fluency in a second language, offering you a dual perspective that neither subject alone can provide. Linguistics examines how language works at every level, from the sounds that make up words and the grammatical rules that structure sentences to the ways language is used in social contexts and how it shapes thought and identity. Studying a modern language alongside linguistics enriches both: you develop practical linguistic competence while also developing the analytical tools to understand what you are learning at a deeper level. At the University of Warwick, this four-year full-time programme with an intercalated year allows you to combine linguistics with Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish, giving you an exceptionally wide range of language options. You will examine how language works, how it is used in communication, and how it shapes societies and cultures, while simultaneously building strong written and spoken competence in your chosen language. The intercalated year gives you an extended period of professional or academic experience in a context related to your language, developing both your linguistic fluency and your professional preparation. The programme also includes a sandwich placement year and work placements. Graduates of linguistics with modern language programmes work in translation and interpreting, language teaching, academia, international business, publishing, journalism, speech and language therapy (with additional training), computational linguistics, and any role that benefits from both a deep understanding of how language works and practical multilingual competence. Postgraduate study in linguistics, applied linguistics, translation and interpreting, or language education is a natural route for those who wish to develop their expertise further.
