Marine biology and coastal ecology together provide one of the most compelling lenses through which to understand life on Earth. Oceans cover more than two-thirds of the planet's surface and support an extraordinary diversity of life, from microscopic phytoplankton to the largest animals that have ever existed. Coastal ecosystems, including estuaries, saltmarshes, kelp forests, and coral reefs, are among the most productive and ecologically vital habitats on the planet, and they face some of the most pressing threats from climate change, pollution, and habitat loss. Studying them requires a blend of field skills, laboratory science, and ecological theory. You will study marine organisms and their adaptations, the dynamics of marine and coastal ecosystems, oceanography, environmental monitoring, and conservation science.
