BSc Marine & Freshwater Biology
About this course
Marine and Freshwater Biology is a discipline that explores the living systems of aquatic environments, from the headwaters of upland rivers through lowland wetlands and estuaries to the open ocean. Aquatic ecosystems support extraordinary biodiversity and provide ecosystem services that human societies depend on, from food and water to climate regulation and coastal protection. At the same time, they are among the most threatened environments on Earth, facing pressures from pollution, habitat loss, climate change, and overexploitation. Understanding the biology, ecology, and interconnection of these systems is essential to protecting them. At Aberystwyth University, this three-year, full-time programme is one of very few in the UK to take an integrated approach from catchment to coast, giving you a genuinely connected understanding of how freshwater and marine systems are linked rather than treating them in isolation. You will study the biology and ecology of aquatic organisms and communities, the physical and chemical processes that shape their environments, and the stressors that threaten the most vulnerable species and habitats. The university's location in west Wales provides immediate access to a diverse range of aquatic environments, from mountain streams and estuaries to the open waters of Cardigan Bay, making fieldwork a central part of the learning experience. You will develop the practical survey, sampling, and analytical skills that conservation and research careers require. Graduates of Marine and Freshwater Biology work in environmental consultancy, conservation organisations, government agencies, fisheries management, water utilities, and academic or applied research. Many pursue postgraduate study in marine biology, ecology, environmental science, or conservation, building specialist expertise for research or senior professional roles. The combination of ecological understanding, fieldwork experience, and quantitative skills the degree develops is valued across the environmental sector and in organisations working on sustainable ocean and freshwater management.
