BSc Marketing and Psychology
About this course
Marketing and psychology is a combination that speaks directly to how contemporary marketing actually works. Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour, cognition and emotion, and its insights into how people perceive, process, decide and remember are fundamental to understanding why consumers behave as they do. Marketing, in turn, draws heavily on these insights to design communications, products and experiences that resonate with audiences and build lasting relationships. Studying both together gives you a theoretically grounded and analytically rigorous understanding of one of the most commercially important questions in business: what influences what people buy and why. At Aberystwyth University, this three-year full-time degree allows you to explore consumer behaviour, the psychological mechanisms that underlie purchasing decisions, and the ways in which marketing strategies shape the relationship between businesses and their customers. You will engage with social psychology, cognitive psychology and social influence theory alongside the core disciplines of marketing, including brand management, market research, digital marketing and communications strategy. The growing role of social media and digital platforms in mediating consumer behaviour is a particular focus, reflecting the reality of how marketing now operates. The programme draws on the scientific traditions of psychology, which means you will develop quantitative and research methodology skills alongside the more creative and strategic capabilities that marketing demands. You will learn to design and interpret research, to apply psychological frameworks to marketing problems, and to evaluate the ethical dimensions of influence and persuasion in commercial contexts. Graduates from marketing and psychology programmes move into consumer insights and market research, digital marketing, brand management, advertising, UX design, customer experience, product management, and a wide range of commercial and communications roles. Postgraduate study in psychology, consumer behaviour, marketing or business is a well-established pathway.
