MA Mathematics and Spanish & Latin American Studies
About this course
Mathematics and Spanish and Latin American studies is a combination that brings together two of the most powerful intellectual tools available: the rigorous logical and quantitative methods of mathematics, and the linguistic and cultural breadth that comes from deep engagement with the Spanish-speaking world. Mathematics underpins all contemporary science, business, and technology, developing exceptional analytical precision and problem-solving ability. Spanish and Latin American studies opens access to the language and cultures of one of the world's most geographically and culturally diverse language communities, spanning Spain, Latin America, and growing diaspora populations in the United States and elsewhere. At the University of Aberdeen, this five-year full-time programme combines a dynamic and highly rated Spanish and Latin American studies programme with mathematics, itself highly rated at the institution. You will develop your Spanish language skills to a high level while exploring the Hispanic world's literature, history, politics, and contemporary culture, alongside rigorous training in pure and applied mathematics. The combination is distinctive and develops a range of capabilities that employers in international business, finance, research, and policy-oriented roles will find particularly useful. Entry typically requires around 168 UCAS tariff points. Graduates with mathematics and Spanish are well placed for careers in international finance, data science, research, teaching, the diplomatic service, international business, and any role that benefits from both analytical rigour and cross-cultural communication. The rarity of the combination is a genuine advantage in the job market. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in mathematics, statistics, economics, or Hispanic studies.
