BSc Mathematics
About this course
Mathematics is one of the oldest intellectual disciplines and one of the most powerful tools for understanding the world. It provides the language of science, technology, and economics and the conceptual framework through which complex systems can be modelled, analysed, and understood. From pure mathematics, with its commitment to rigorous proof and the exploration of abstract structures, to applied mathematics in areas such as financial modelling, operational research, and cosmology, the discipline develops a way of thinking that is valued across an exceptionally wide range of professional contexts. At the University of Portsmouth this three-year full-time programme covers the core mathematical topics of calculus, algebra, matrices, modelling, and differential equations, giving you a thorough foundation before you shape your degree to your own ambitions and interests through optional modules in pure and applied mathematics. The programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, as well as a work placement, giving you both professional experience in a mathematical or analytical role and the chance to study at a partner institution abroad. This combination of academic breadth, practical experience, and international exposure is designed to produce graduates who are ready to apply their mathematical skills in a wide range of professional settings. Mathematics graduates are among the most sought-after in the UK labour market. Finance, actuarial work, data science, software development, engineering, teaching, the civil service, and consultancy are all well-established paths. The optional module choices available in the later years of the programme allow you to develop specialisms relevant to your career interests, whether in pure mathematics, financial applications, operational research, or the mathematical sciences more broadly. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study, deepening their expertise in areas where advanced quantitative training is directly valuable.
