About this course
Mathematics with languages is an unusual and compelling combination that develops two quite different but complementary modes of rigorous thinking. Mathematics is the science of abstract structures and the quantitative analysis of the world, demanding precision, logical reasoning, and the ability to construct and follow proofs. Language study, at degree level, develops a different but equally rigorous capacity: close textual reading, cultural contextualisation, and the linguistic competence to engage with literature, culture, and society in a language other than English. The combination produces graduates who are simultaneously highly analytical in a mathematical sense and genuinely multilingual, a profile of real rarity and value. At the University of Liverpool, this four-year programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to spend time in a country where your chosen language is spoken, developing your linguistic fluency in an immersion environment while experiencing another educational culture. You will study core areas of mathematics, including analysis, algebra, probability and statistics, applied mathematics, and numerical methods, alongside your language study, which covers linguistic competence, literature, culture, and history in your chosen language. The programme is designed to allow genuine development in both disciplines, rather than treating either as a minor supplement to the other. Graduates with mathematics and languages move into careers that benefit from both quantitative and linguistic skills. International financial institutions, multilateral organisations, foreign policy and diplomatic roles, data science positions in global companies, actuarial work with international connections, and academic research in both disciplines are all natural directions.
