MEng Mechanical Engineering (4 years)
About this course
Mechanical engineering at masters level is the most rigorous and comprehensive way to enter the discipline, providing the depth of technical knowledge, the advanced analytical skills, and the engineering judgement that the most challenging design and innovation challenges require. Where a BEng provides a solid engineering foundation, a masters-level programme develops substantially greater capability in research, advanced design methods, and specialist technical areas, and is the recognised route to the highest levels of professional engineering practice. At Southampton this four-year full-time MEng includes an industry placement, which is one of its most significant features. You will spend time working in an engineering organisation before completing your degree, developing professional competence, building a network, and gaining the kind of applied understanding that transforms how you approach your final year. The programme covers mechanical design, structures, materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and manufacturing processes, and then allows you to select specialist topics that reflect your interests and career direction. Project work runs throughout the degree, applying design skills to real-world problems and developing the integrative engineering thinking that professional practice demands. The MEng qualification is the primary route to chartered engineer status in mechanical engineering, and Southampton's strong research reputation and industry connections provide an excellent launch pad for a professional engineering career. Graduates move into careers in aerospace, automotive, energy, defence, manufacturing, consultancy, and research across sectors where mechanical engineering expertise is fundamental. Many work towards chartered membership of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Others go on to doctoral research or specialist postgraduate study in areas such as advanced materials, energy systems, or robotics.
