Mechanical engineering is the engineering discipline most directly concerned with how things move and work. From the thermodynamics of an engine to the dynamics of a rotating shaft, from the strength of a structural component to the flow of fluid through a pipe, it encompasses the fundamental physical principles that govern the behaviour of machines and systems. The discipline is both rigorously analytical and intensely practical, requiring you to understand theory deeply enough to apply it to situations you have not encountered before. At Anglia Ruskin University this four-year full-time degree prepares you for professional engineering practice, covering core subjects including statics and dynamics, materials science, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, manufacturing processes, and engineering design. You will develop both analytical and practical skills, working in laboratories and on design projects as well as engaging with the theoretical foundations of the discipline. The four-year programme provides the depth of study associated with a master's-level qualification, positioning you well for professional development and, in due course, for progression towards chartered engineer status. The course is designed with employability in mind, developing the problem-solving and design skills that employers across the engineering sector require. Mechanical engineering graduates work across a remarkably wide range of industries and roles. You might work in product design, manufacturing, the automotive or aerospace sector, energy systems, medical devices, defence, construction, or consultancy. The transferable analytical and problem-solving skills developed in the degree are also valued in roles that sit at the boundary of engineering and management, including project engineering and technical operations. Further study at postgraduate level in specialist areas such as advanced manufacturing, robotics, renewable energy, or mechatronics is available for those who wish to develop a deeper specialism or pursue research.
