BEng Mechanical Engineering
About this course
Mechanical engineering is the engineering discipline most concerned with how things move, how they are made and how they carry and transform energy. It encompasses everything from the design of individual components and mechanisms to the analysis of large-scale thermal and fluid systems, and its methods are applied across aerospace, automotive, energy, manufacturing, robotics and countless other sectors. The discipline trains you to think rigorously about physical systems, to apply mathematical and computational tools to analyse their behaviour and to make sound engineering judgements about design, materials and manufacturing. At Coventry University, this three-year full-time programme invites you to explore how things work, move and are made, developing the skills and knowledge to design, build and improve mechanical systems across industries including aerospace, automotive and manufacturing. A sandwich year gives you extended professional experience, a year abroad broadens your engineering perspective internationally, and a work placement provides further hands-on exposure within the degree, so you graduate with direct professional experience as well as a thorough academic foundation. A typical entry tariff of 104 points makes the programme accessible to students from a range of engineering science backgrounds, and the combination of academic rigour with substantial real-world exposure is a strong preparation for the demands of professional engineering practice. Graduates move into engineering roles across a wide range of industries, working in design, analysis, testing, manufacturing engineering and project management. The versatility of mechanical engineering means that the skills you develop are transferable across sectors, and many graduates move fluidly between automotive, aerospace, energy and consumer products during their careers. The sandwich year and placements give Coventry graduates a particularly strong position in the graduate labour market, where employers consistently value direct professional experience. Progression towards chartered engineer status through the relevant professional bodies is a natural aspiration for graduates who build on their degree through continued professional development.
