About this course

Mechanical engineering sits at the foundation of the industrial world, concerned with designing, building and maintaining the physical systems and devices that transform energy and matter into useful forms. From turbines, engines and pumps to medical devices, robots and aerospace components, mechanical engineers apply the principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and materials science to create things that work. In a period of rapid technological change, mechanical engineers are central to the transition to cleaner energy, the development of autonomous vehicles and the growing role of robotics in manufacturing and healthcare. At the University of Portsmouth, the three-year full-time BEng develops your engineering knowledge and practical skills across the core areas of the discipline, preparing you to engage with contemporary challenges in transport, energy, healthcare and robotics. You will study engineering mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials, manufacturing processes, control systems and engineering design, developing the quantitative and analytical skills that the profession requires alongside the ability to apply them to open-ended design problems. The degree includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial professional experience and international perspectives before graduation. Portsmouth's engineering department has strong industry connections, and the city's naval and maritime heritage provides an interesting engineering context alongside the broader manufacturing and technology sectors in the south-east region. Graduates work in aerospace, automotive, energy, manufacturing, marine engineering, consultancy and public sector engineering. Many pursue chartered engineer status through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Postgraduate study in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, robotics or energy systems is a natural next step for those who want to specialise further.
