BEng Mechanical Engineering
About this course
Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest and most broadly applicable of engineering disciplines, covering the design, analysis, manufacture, and maintenance of mechanical systems across an extraordinary range of scales and applications, from miniature medical devices to large industrial plant and aerospace structures. Mechanical engineers apply mathematics, physics, materials science, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics to real design problems, developing both the theoretical understanding and the practical skills to create systems and components that function reliably in the real world. At the University of the West of Scotland, this four-year full-time programme develops rigorous engineering fundamentals alongside applied and project-based work that prepares you for professional practice. You will study the core principles of solid mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, materials, design, and manufacturing, developing the analytical and computational skills that modern engineering demands. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement, giving you direct professional experience in engineering environments and an international academic perspective that broadens your technical and professional formation. Graduates from mechanical engineering programmes work across aerospace, automotive, energy, manufacturing, offshore engineering, construction, and many other sectors, in roles including design engineer, systems engineer, manufacturing engineer, project engineer, and technical consultant. Many pursue chartered engineer status through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Further study at master's level in mechanical engineering, energy systems, advanced manufacturing, or related specialisms is available for those who wish to deepen their expertise or move into research.
