MEng Mechanical Engineering with Management
About this course
Mechanical engineering is concerned with designing, analysing, and manufacturing physical systems that involve forces, motion, and energy conversion. It is one of the broadest of the engineering disciplines, encompassing everything from engines and turbines to manufacturing processes, robotics, and structural analysis. The very best engineers in industry, however, are distinguished not only by their technical expertise but by their ability to make sound commercial decisions, manage resources, and lead teams effectively. The combination of mechanical engineering and management prepares graduates for exactly this kind of leadership role. At the University of Aberdeen, you will develop exceptional engineering knowledge and skills alongside a solid grounding in commercial decision-making, finance, economics, and planning. The programme covers the core disciplines of mechanical engineering, including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, structural analysis, materials, and design, alongside management and business subjects that contextualise the commercial environment in which engineers work. The programme includes a year abroad and runs over five years full-time, leading to a master's level qualification. Graduates of mechanical engineering with management programmes work in engineering management, project management, operations management, consultancy, and senior technical roles across manufacturing, energy, aerospace, defence, and infrastructure. The management dimension of the degree is particularly valued by employers seeking engineers who can transition into leadership and strategic roles. Many graduates pursue professional engineering registration towards chartered status, or go on to postgraduate study in engineering management or an applied technical specialisation.
