About this course

Mechatronics and robotic systems is the engineering discipline that integrates mechanical engineering, electronics, electrical engineering, control systems, and computing into a unified approach for designing intelligent, automated machines. Where earlier generations of engineers might have specialised in just one of these areas, mechatronics recognises that modern systems, whether autonomous vehicles, manufacturing robots, medical devices, or aerospace systems, are inherently interdisciplinary and require engineers who can think across all of them. At the University of Liverpool, this three-year full-time degree gives you a rigorous training across the full spectrum of mechatronics. You will study the mechanical principles that determine how structures and mechanisms are designed and loaded, the electrical and electronic systems that sense and actuate, the control engineering that enables systems to respond intelligently to their environment, and the computing that ties it all together. The programme draws on examples from the full range of applications where mechatronics is central, from remotely operated space vehicles and driverless cars to automated assembly lines and modern automotive systems, where even a high-performance road car incorporates more than a hundred control computers managing everything from engine performance to active suspension. A year abroad gives you an international perspective on how mechatronics and robotics are developed and applied in different industrial and research cultures. You will develop both theoretical depth and practical engineering competence, graduating with the ability to work on complex integrated systems that combine multiple engineering disciplines. Graduates go on to careers as mechatronics engineers, robotics engineers, control systems engineers, automation specialists, and systems designers in sectors including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, healthcare, defence, and consumer technology. The degree is a strong foundation for chartered engineer status and for postgraduate study in robotics, control engineering, or advanced manufacturing.
