BA Media And Music
About this course
Media and Music is a degree that investigates two of the most significant dimensions of contemporary cultural life. Music has always been mediated: recorded, broadcast, streamed and distributed through technologies and industries that shape what we hear and how we hear it. At the same time, media industries from television and film to social platforms depend on music to create atmosphere, emotion and identity. Studying the two together allows you to understand both the cultural significance of music and the media structures through which it reaches audiences. At Bangor University, the three-year full-time programme develops your understanding of media theory, media industries and cultural analysis alongside a serious engagement with music, its history, production, performance and role in contemporary life. You will examine how media organisations function, how audiences are constituted and how digital platforms have transformed the relationship between music, media and audiences. The degree includes a foundation year option, a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you a broad range of opportunities to develop academic preparation, international perspective and professional experience alongside your studies. Bangor's location in north Wales, surrounded by a rich Welsh-language music and media culture, gives the degree a distinctive local dimension alongside its broader concerns. The Welsh-language media sector, including S4C and BBC Wales, provides an interesting context for understanding the relationship between language, culture and broadcast media. Graduates of media and music degrees work in broadcasting, music production, journalism, digital media, arts management, public relations, content creation and education. Many develop portfolio careers across the creative industries. Postgraduate study in music, media, communications or cultural studies is a natural next step for those who want to specialise further.
