About this course

Mental health nursing is concerned with supporting people through some of the most difficult experiences of their lives, from acute mental health crises to the long-term recovery journey that many people with serious mental illness undertake. Mental health nurses work in hospitals, crisis teams, community mental health services, forensic units, substance misuse services, eating disorder units and primary care, providing care that combines clinical assessment, therapeutic relationships, medicines management, risk management and advocacy. The role requires both scientific knowledge and exceptional interpersonal sensitivity. At Leeds Beckett University you will study for three years full-time, including a year abroad that broadens your perspective on how different healthcare systems approach mental health care. You will explore the biological, psychological and social factors that shape mental health and wellbeing, developing a comprehensive and integrated understanding of how these perspectives connect in clinical practice. You will learn to assess needs, build powerful therapeutic relationships, and deliver person-centred care across a range of mental health settings, supported by substantial clinical placements that develop your practical competence and professional confidence alongside your academic studies. Registered mental health nurses work across NHS mental health trusts, independent providers, crisis and home treatment teams, forensic services and community settings. The profession offers real diversity of specialism, with opportunities to develop expertise in areas including child and adolescent mental health, perinatal mental health, psychosis, dementia care, dual diagnosis and trauma-informed practice. Many nurses progress to advanced clinical practice, nurse prescribing, leadership, research or specialist therapy roles through postgraduate study. The profession offers consistent employment prospects across the UK and internationally, and the personal rewards of accompanying people through recovery are central to why many practitioners choose and remain in this career.
