BSc Mental Health Nursing Practice
About this course
Mental health nursing is a demanding and deeply meaningful career that places you at the centre of support for people experiencing the full range of mental health challenges, from acute crises and serious mental illness to anxiety, depression, and the complex needs that arise from trauma, addiction, and neurodevelopmental conditions. Mental health nurses work across inpatient wards, community teams, crisis resolution services, forensic settings, and a growing range of primary care and voluntary sector contexts, providing person-centred care that promotes recovery and positive mental wellbeing. At the University of Sunderland, this three-year full-time programme develops the knowledge, skills, and values you need to deliver person-centred care to those experiencing mental distress and illness. You will study the biological, psychological, and social dimensions of mental health, develop clinical assessment and therapeutic communication skills, and learn to apply evidence-based approaches to care planning and intervention. Practice placements are integral throughout, ensuring that your academic learning is grounded in real clinical experience across a range of mental health settings. Entry typically requires around 152 UCAS tariff points. Graduating from a mental health nursing programme gives you eligibility to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a mental health nurse. There is sustained national demand for qualified mental health nurses, and graduates are well placed to progress into specialist clinical roles, team leadership, advanced practice, and nursing education. The degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate study in areas such as cognitive behavioural therapy, psychotherapy training, or mental health research.
