BSc Microbiology
About this course
Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, the bacteria, viruses, fungi, archaea, and protozoa that constitute the most abundant and diverse life forms on Earth. These organisms are invisible to the naked eye but play roles of extraordinary importance in every ecosystem, from the soil bacteria that drive nutrient cycling to the gut microbiome that influences human health to the pathogens that cause infectious disease. Understanding them is fundamental to medicine, agriculture, environmental science, biotechnology, and food production. At Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, this three-year full-time programme focuses study on all types of microorganisms, helping you acquire both the theoretical knowledge and the practical laboratory skills needed for a career in microbiology. Imperial's research strengths in the life sciences ensure that the teaching is connected to cutting-edge science, and the practical training gives you experience with the techniques, instruments, and approaches that professional microbiologists use. You will study microbial cell biology, genetics, ecology, pathogenesis, and the industrial and environmental applications of microorganisms. Graduates of microbiology programmes enter careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, public health and clinical laboratories, food science, environmental consultancy, and academic research. The combination of theoretical understanding and practical laboratory competency the degree develops is valued across the life sciences. Many graduates go on to postgraduate research in microbiology, infectious disease, molecular biology, or related disciplines, where Imperial's global reputation and research network provide significant advantages.
