Middle Eastern studies and politics is a degree that brings together two disciplines essential for understanding one of the most consequential regions in world affairs. The Middle East is a diverse and historically rich region whose politics, religion, and culture have shaped global history and continue to generate some of the most complex and pressing challenges in international affairs, from conflict and displacement to energy security, democratisation, and the role of political Islam. Studying it alongside the broader analytical frameworks of political science gives you the tools to engage with those challenges with both depth and rigour. At the University of Leeds, this three-year, full-time programme gives you an in-depth understanding of the history, politics, religion, and culture of the Middle East alongside the study of politics more broadly, including political theory, comparative government, and international relations. You will develop the ability to analyse the complex political circumstances that shape the region and the world, drawing on knowledge of its specific histories and cultures rather than applying generic frameworks that miss what is distinctive. A sandwich year, year abroad option, and work placement opportunities are all available, giving you professional experience in relevant organisations and, potentially, time in the Middle East itself, which is transformative for anyone serious about the subject. Graduates are well-placed for careers in diplomacy, the foreign service, international organisations, journalism, intelligence, development organisations, think tanks, and consultancies with Middle Eastern interests.
