About this course

Midwifery is a profession centred on one of the most significant experiences of human life: pregnancy, labour and the period immediately following birth. A midwife is the primary care professional for women with straightforward pregnancies, and a skilled and trusted partner to the wider clinical team in more complex situations. The discipline combines detailed physiological and clinical knowledge with exceptional interpersonal skill, cultural competence and the capacity to make sound judgements under pressure, often in conditions of uncertainty and considerable emotional intensity. At Coventry University, this three-year full-time BSc (Hons) degree provides a comprehensive preparation for entry to the register as a qualified midwife. You will study the physiology of pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period alongside the complexities that can arise, including medical conditions in pregnancy, obstetric emergencies and the care of vulnerable women and families. Clinical placement runs throughout the programme, meaning that your learning in university is continually integrated with real practice in hospitals, community settings and alongside home birth teams. You will develop the communication skills, professional judgement and commitment to woman-centred care that define excellent midwifery practice. Typical entry is around 136 UCAS tariff points, and entry to midwifery programmes typically requires specific health and character requirements in addition to academic qualifications. Graduation leads to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and eligibility to practise as a midwife in NHS and independent settings across the UK. Many graduates go on to develop specialist interests in areas such as mental health in perinatal care, bereavement support, high-risk obstetrics, public health or neonatal care. Career progression can lead to senior clinical roles, team leadership, consultancy posts, education, research and service management. Some graduates also continue to postgraduate study in advanced practice, public health or healthcare leadership.
