BA Modern and Contemporary History
About this course
Modern and contemporary history covers the period from the end of the eighteenth century to the present day, a span of time that includes some of the most transformative, violent, and intellectually rich developments in the history of human civilisation. The French Revolution, industrialisation, imperialism, two world wars, the Holocaust, decolonisation, the Cold War, and the turbulent politics of the twenty-first century are all part of this story, and studying them requires both factual knowledge and the analytical tools to understand why they happened and what they meant. At Aberystwyth the Modern and Contemporary History degree explores this era with particular attention to the contradictions of modernity: the simultaneous proclamation of human rights and the commission of genocide; the promise of reason, science, and technology alongside their destructive applications; the rise of mass participation in politics, war, and culture. The programme develops your capacity to read primary sources critically, to assess competing historical interpretations, and to construct clear and well-evidenced arguments. You will study the period through multiple lenses, including political, social, cultural, and intellectual history, across different national and global contexts. History graduates are valued across a wide range of professions. The research, writing, and analytical skills that modern history develops are sought by employers in journalism, the civil service, law, education, publishing, heritage, and the arts. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in history or related disciplines, pursuing research degrees or professional qualifications. Others take their skills directly into professional life, applying the historian's capacity for rigorous evidence-based reasoning to the demands of contemporary work.
