BA Modern Languages And Philosophy, Ethics And Religion
About this course
Modern languages and philosophy, ethics and religion is a combination that spans the linguistic, analytical, and humanistic dimensions of academic life. Modern languages develops your proficiency in one or more foreign languages alongside a deep engagement with the literatures, cultures, and histories of the societies in which those languages are spoken. Philosophy, ethics, and religion examines the foundational questions of how we know what we know, what we are morally obligated to do, how religious traditions have shaped and continue to shape human experience, and what kind of life is worth living. Together, the two strands develop both the linguistic breadth to engage with different cultural worlds and the philosophical depth to ask the hardest questions about values, knowledge, and meaning. At Bangor University, this programme brings these disciplines together within a Welsh university that takes seriously both its bilingual context and its strengths in humanities. You will develop your modern language skills to a high level through the language and literature strand, and engage with philosophical and ethical questions and with the study of religion through the philosophy, ethics, and religion component. The combination encourages you to bring comparative cultural perspectives to philosophical questions and philosophical rigour to the study of literature and religious traditions. The programme includes a foundation year, providing additional academic preparation before the main degree begins, and a sandwich year with a work placement, giving you professional experience in relevant contexts. Graduates from modern languages and philosophy combinations move into careers in education, translation, journalism, the civil service, international organisations, cultural institutions, religious communities, NGOs, and many other fields where the combination of language skills, cultural understanding, and philosophical training is valued. Postgraduate study in philosophy, modern languages, religious studies, or related humanities is a natural route for those who wish to develop further.
