MA Modern Languages (Arabic and German) and English
About this course
Arabic, German and English is a triple degree that develops linguistic competence and cultural understanding in three of the world's most significant languages, each carrying with it a distinctive literary and intellectual tradition and a particular geopolitical relevance. Arabic is the language of more than 400 million people and the key to the cultures, histories and contemporary societies of the Middle East and North Africa. German is one of the most widely spoken languages in Europe and the language of an economy that plays a central role in global trade and politics. English brings both the global reach of the most widely learned second language and one of the world's richest literary traditions. At the University of St Andrews this four-year full-time programme develops your competence in Arabic and German alongside engagement with English literature and language, offering the opportunity for comparative analyses between different languages, literatures, cultures, histories and political economies. A year abroad gives you the opportunity to deepen your linguistic and cultural engagement in an international setting. The combination of three languages and their associated cultural and intellectual traditions develops a rare analytical breadth and the kind of cross-cultural intelligence that is increasingly valued in a globalised world. Graduates pursue careers in diplomacy, translation and interpreting, international journalism, international business, the foreign service, cultural organisations, academia and NGOs. The ability to work across Arabic, German and English opens opportunities across Europe, the Middle East, and global organisations. Postgraduate study in linguistics, area studies, comparative literature, translation or international relations is a natural continuation.
