MA Modern Languages, Communication and Cultures with Spanish
About this course
Modern languages, communication, and cultures with Spanish is a programme that takes you from beginner level to proficient standard in Spanish while also developing your understanding of intercultural communication, media, and the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Languages are among the most practically useful and intellectually rewarding subjects you can study at degree level, and Spanish in particular is one of the world's most widely spoken languages, with a presence across Europe, Latin America, the United States, and beyond. At Heriot-Watt University, whose language programmes are ranked among the best in Scotland, this four-year full-time MA (Hons) takes communication seriously as a discipline in its own right, examining how meaning is made and transmitted across different media, cultures, and contexts. You will develop fluency in Spanish alongside critical thinking about language, culture, and communication, studying how societies construct identities and how intercultural misunderstanding arises and can be addressed. The sandwich year and the year abroad are both built into the programme, giving you extended professional and immersive experience in a Spanish-speaking environment that is essential for developing real linguistic competence. Work placement opportunities are also integrated throughout the degree. Graduates from modern languages and communication programmes are valued by employers who need people who can work across cultural and linguistic boundaries. Careers in international business, diplomacy, translation and interpreting, communications, journalism, tourism, education, and the voluntary sector are all common. The intercultural competence and communication skills you develop are also highly transferable into any sector with an international dimension. Postgraduate study in translation, intercultural communication, language teaching, or area studies is a natural continuation for those who want to specialise.
