About this course

French, Spanish, and ancient Greek is a combination that spans two major living European languages and one of the foundational languages of Western civilisation. French connects you to one of the world's great literary and intellectual traditions and to the cultures of over seventy Francophone countries. Spanish gives access to the largest block of native speakers of any Romance language, opening the cultures of Spain and twenty Latin American nations. Ancient Greek is the language of Homer, Plato, and Sophocles, and reading these texts in the original is one of the most demanding and rewarding things a language student can do. At St Andrews, as an MA (Hons) student of French, you will develop language and communication skills to a high level of proficiency through the study of French and Francophone language, literature, and culture. Alongside this, you will study Spanish and ancient Greek, developing proficiency in both and engaging with the literary and cultural traditions each carries. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to develop your modern language skills in a real immersive context. It runs over four years full-time and leads to an MA (Hons), with a typical entry tariff of 200 points. Graduates of programmes combining French, Spanish, and ancient Greek possess an exceptionally rare combination of linguistic skills and cultural knowledge. Careers in translation, diplomacy, the foreign and civil service, international journalism, education, publishing, and academic research are natural directions. The ancient Greek component is particularly valued in classical scholarship and in fields where engagement with the ancient world remains relevant. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in modern languages, classical studies, or comparative literature.
