BA Modern Languages with a Year Abroad
About this course
Modern languages study is far more than the acquisition of fluency in another tongue. It is an encounter with the ways that different societies think, organise themselves, create literature and art, and make sense of experience. Language and culture are inseparable, and studying a foreign language to degree level means learning to inhabit other frameworks of meaning, to read texts that assume different histories and values, and to communicate with genuine precision and sensitivity across cultural boundaries. In a world shaped by global interdependence, these capacities are both intellectually enriching and professionally significant. At King's College London, this four-year programme allows you to study one or two languages alongside their related cultures, literatures, and histories. You will develop advanced linguistic competence, working with written and spoken registers across a range of contexts, while also engaging with the cultural, literary, and historical dimensions of the societies whose languages you are learning. The programme includes a year abroad as a central component, giving you sustained immersion in a linguistic and cultural environment that accelerates both your fluency and your understanding. This experience, living and studying or working in another country, is consistently cited by graduates as transformative. The analytical, communicative, and intercultural skills developed through a modern languages degree are highly transferable. Graduates work across diplomacy, international business, law, journalism, publishing, translation and interpreting, the civil service, education, and the cultural industries. Language graduates are valued not only for what they know but for how they think: the close attention to meaning and context that linguistic training instils is applicable in almost any professional setting. Many students also go on to postgraduate study in linguistics, area studies, translation, or other humanities disciplines.
