About this course

Motorsport engineering is a highly specialised discipline that applies mechanical, automotive, and electronic engineering to the demanding performance requirements of competitive racing. From Formula 1 to touring cars, from motorcycle racing to endurance events, motorsport operates at the absolute limits of what engineering can achieve: vehicles must be fast, reliable, and safe under conditions of extreme mechanical stress, and the margins between winning and losing are determined by engineering decisions made in fractions of a second or over months of development. At the University of Derby you will study part-time on a programme that includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement, giving you a structured progression from foundational engineering knowledge through to specialist motorsport content. The foundation year is designed for students who may not yet be certain which area of engineering to pursue, covering multi-disciplinary engineering content and the broad skills and knowledge that employers across engineering consistently seek. As the programme progresses you will engage with the specific engineering challenges of motorsport: vehicle dynamics, chassis design and analysis, aerodynamics, powertrain development, data acquisition and telemetry, and the regulatory frameworks governing motorsport engineering. The combination of academic study and extensive placement activity ensures that your technical knowledge is always grounded in professional experience. Graduates of motorsport engineering work in the motorsport industry at all levels, from club racing to professional series, as well as in the automotive and aerospace sectors, where the performance engineering skills developed in motorsport are highly transferable. Roles in vehicle design, performance analysis, race engineering, data analysis, and manufacturing engineering are all common directions. The skills in precision engineering, rapid prototyping, and performance optimisation that the degree develops are also sought by defence, high-performance automotive, and advanced manufacturing companies. Further study at postgraduate level in motorsport engineering, automotive engineering, or mechanical engineering is available for those wishing to specialise or move into senior technical roles.
