Music production has transformed from a craft practised in expensive studios to a skill accessible to anyone with a computer and the right training. Yet the fundamentals remain constant: understanding how sound behaves, how to shape it through recording and mixing, and how to bring a musical idea from a rough sketch to a finished track. A degree in music and audio production develops both the creative instincts that make music compelling and the technical knowledge that makes it sound the way you want. At Coventry University this three-year, full-time programme builds your skills in recording, composition, production, mixing, and mastering, supported by expert tutors and industry-standard equipment. You will learn to work across different genres and formats, developing your ear alongside your technical command of the tools professional producers use. A sandwich year is built into the programme, and a year abroad and work placement are also available, giving you the opportunity to spend time working in the industry and broadening your perspective through experience in different music scenes or production environments. These real-world elements are central to connecting your learning with the commercial and creative realities of the industry. Graduates from music and audio production work across a wide range of roles in the creative and technology sectors. Many go on to careers as producers, sound engineers, mixing or mastering engineers, composers for film and television, or music supervisors. Others move into music technology, broadcast audio, post-production for video games, podcasting, or live sound. The entrepreneurial dimension of the course equips you to develop your own projects and build a freelance portfolio as well as to work within established organisations. Some graduates continue into postgraduate study in music, sound design, or music technology, deepening a particular specialism or building towards a career in research or higher education.
