BA Music (Community & Education)
About this course
Music in community and education settings brings the transformative power of musical engagement to contexts beyond the concert hall, working with children, young people and diverse communities to develop participation, creativity and wellbeing through music. This is a discipline that takes music seriously both as an art form and as a social practice, asking not just how music is made but who makes it, who it reaches and what it can do for individuals and communities when it is placed at the centre of educational and creative experience. At the University of Hull, this three-year full-time programme is designed for musicians who want to inspire others and to develop the skills needed to work as peripatetic music teachers, classroom specialists, animateurs or arts practitioners across community and educational settings. You will develop your own musical competence alongside an understanding of music education theory and practice, learning how to design and deliver musical experiences for people of different ages, backgrounds and abilities. You will engage with the challenges and possibilities of working in schools, arts organisations, community groups, healthcare settings and other contexts where music plays a role in learning and wellbeing. A typical entry tariff of 104 points makes this programme accessible to musicians coming from a range of training backgrounds, and the practical emphasis means you will graduate with direct experience of the professional contexts you are entering. Graduates work as instrumental and vocal teachers in schools and music services, as classroom music specialists, as community music leaders, as creative practitioners in arts organisations and as coordinators of music programmes in health, care and community development settings. Some go on to qualify as school teachers through a PGCE, while others develop portfolio careers combining performance, teaching and community work. Postgraduate study in music education, community music or arts practice is a natural route for those who wish to specialise or move into leadership and research roles within the sector.
