BMus Music (Performance)
About this course
Music performance at degree level is a serious, intensive commitment to developing your craft as a musician alongside the academic study that contextualises and enriches it. The demands of professional performance, whether in classical music, jazz, musical theatre or contemporary genres, are extraordinarily high, and a performance degree provides the structured, intensive training and expert feedback needed to reach those standards while also developing the musical understanding and versatility that the professional world requires. At the University of Leeds, the three-year full-time BMus Music (Performance) is designed to give you a performance-intensive experience within a university environment. You will receive individual instrumental or vocal tuition from expert practitioners, participate in ensemble and orchestral activities, and develop your performing skills through regular performance opportunities in an environment that takes musical standards seriously. The programme also supports you in pursuing other areas of musical interest should you wish to, providing breadth alongside the specialist depth of performance training. The degree includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you experience of the professional music world before graduation. Leeds has a rich and active music scene, from the Northern Ballet and Opera North to a thriving independent music community, and the city's cultural life enriches the performance context of the degree. The university's concert facilities and connections with the regional professional music community support regular high-quality performance opportunities. Graduates of music performance degrees work as professional performers, music educators, conductors, musical directors, accompanists and studio musicians. Many combine performance with teaching, arts administration, composition or other musical work. Postgraduate study in music performance, conducting, music education or musicology is a natural continuation.
