BA Music Production
About this course
Music production is the craft of creating recorded music, from the initial concept and arrangement through recording, editing, mixing, and mastering to the finished product. It is both a creative and a technical discipline, requiring producers to make aesthetic decisions about sound and arrangement while also understanding the engineering and signal processing tools that shape how music sounds in the final recording. The field has been transformed by digital audio workstations, and today's music producer needs to be fluent in software tools and recording techniques as well as musically knowledgeable and creatively confident. At Edge Hill University, this part-time programme nurtures your artistic talent while developing your craft in well-equipped on-campus studios. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement are all incorporated into the programme, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside your creative and technical development. The specialist modules broaden your appreciation of music and sound, taking you beyond your own creative focus into the wider landscape of the discipline. Studying part-time allows you to pursue your music production work alongside your formal training, and many students develop their practice and professional connections during the degree itself. You will develop skills in recording, editing, mixing, sound design, synthesis, and the use of digital audio workstations, alongside music theory, composition, and the cultural and historical contexts of recorded music. The ability to realise a musical vision technically while making it sound compelling is the central capability the programme develops. Graduates go on to work as music producers, recording engineers, mixing engineers, sound designers, composers for media, and a range of other roles in the music and audio industries. Many develop freelance or independent practices. Postgraduate study in music technology or a related field is an option for those wishing to specialise further or move into teaching and research.
