BSc Music Technology
About this course
Music technology is the discipline at the intersection of music, acoustics and digital technology, concerned with how sound is captured, shaped, processed and distributed in the modern world. It spans music production and recording, live sound engineering, audio for film and television, game audio, podcasting, software development and the technical infrastructure of the music industry. As digital tools have transformed how music is made, delivered and experienced, music technology practitioners have become essential creative and technical contributors across the entire audio landscape. At Leeds Beckett, this three-year full-time programme develops your technical and creative skills in sound and audio production alongside a grounded understanding of the industries in which you will work. You will develop expertise in recording, mixing, sound design, synthesis, audio programming and the use of industry-standard software and hardware. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial professional and international exposure alongside your academic development. The sandwich year is particularly valuable in a field where professional networks and portfolio experience matter as much as technical knowledge. Leeds's vibrant live music scene and its position as one of the UK's most significant cities for popular music provide a rich context for developing your professional connections and practical understanding of the industry. Graduates work as recording engineers, music producers, live sound engineers, audio post-production professionals, game audio designers, broadcast sound operators and in music technology education. The technical skills developed through the degree also transfer into product development in the audio technology industry, acoustic consultancy and music software development. Some graduates pursue postgraduate study in audio engineering, music production or related fields.
