BSc Music Technology
About this course
Music technology sits at the point where artistic creativity and technical rigour meet, and the discipline has transformed how music is produced, distributed, and experienced. At its heart, it is about understanding sound as both a physical phenomenon and a creative medium, and about developing the practical expertise to shape that sound in professional contexts. This three-year full-time BSc at the University of Portsmouth gives you the groundwork for a rewarding career in the music industry as a creative or technical producer. You will explore the science of acoustics, signal processing, digital audio workstations, synthesis, mixing, mastering, and audio for media, building technical skills that are directly applicable in studio, live sound, broadcast, and game audio environments. The programme includes a sandwich year placement and a year abroad, both of which are significant opportunities to develop professional experience and a wider perspective on the industry before you graduate. Work placement experience is also built into the programme, meaning you will have multiple chances to work in real professional settings and build the contacts and portfolio that matter when you are starting out. The breadth of skills you develop, spanning engineering, acoustics, computing, and creative production, opens doors across a wide range of careers. Graduates from music technology programmes go on to work as recording engineers, sound designers, music producers, broadcast audio technicians, audio software developers, and post-production specialists. The technical depth of a BSc also means you are well placed for postgraduate study in audio engineering, acoustics, or related research fields if you want to pursue a more specialised or academic path.
