BA Music with Spanish
About this course
Music and Spanish is a pairing that combines the study of one of the most universal and culturally rich of all human arts with one of the world's most widely spoken languages and its associated cultures. Music as a degree subject encompasses the history and theory of Western art music, analysis of musical works, the practice and history of performance, and often composition and other creative dimensions. Spanish provides linguistic fluency alongside engagement with the cultural, literary and historical traditions of Spain and the Spanish-speaking world, which stretches across Latin America and into communities globally. At Royal Holloway, University of London you will take music as the major element of your degree, comprising around three-quarters of your studies, alongside core Spanish language modules that develop your linguistic proficiency and cultural knowledge. The programme runs full time over three years and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work-placement experience, giving you the opportunity to immerse yourself in a Spanish-speaking environment during your studies and to apply your musical and cultural knowledge in a professional setting. These combined experiences develop a distinctive and well-rounded profile that is attractive to employers in both the cultural and commercial sectors. You will develop musical skills in analysis, history and performance alongside Spanish language competence and the cross-cultural awareness that comes from sustained engagement with another language and its associated traditions. Graduates from music with Spanish programmes move into careers in music education, arts administration, cultural organisations, international business, publishing, journalism and the civil service, as well as professional music performance, music management and production. The language skills add particular value in roles with a Spanish-speaking or international dimension. Postgraduate study in music, cultural management or a related field is also an option.
