BA Musical Theatre and Music Production
About this course
Musical theatre and music production is a combination that reflects the reality of contemporary performance: the skills of performing and the skills of producing sound are increasingly intertwined in a musical landscape where live performance, recording, and digital distribution overlap. Musical theatre brings together singing, acting, and dance within the specific demands of the stage musical, a form with roots in the early twentieth century but evolving continuously in response to new creative influences and production techniques. Music production addresses the craft of recording, arranging, mixing, and shaping sound in studio and live contexts, giving performers and creators the technical capability to realise their creative visions. At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year full-time programme develops your capabilities across both disciplines, placing you in a city with a genuinely significant musical heritage and a vibrant contemporary scene. You will develop your performance skills in musical theatre alongside the technical and creative skills of music production, working in both live and recorded contexts. The programme includes a sandwich year with placement, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you extensive professional and international experience during your degree. Liverpool's connection to the music industry and its creative communities provides a distinctive backdrop for this kind of study. Graduates are prepared for careers across performing arts and music production, including performance in musical theatre, work as music producers and audio engineers, roles in arts administration and production management, and the growing field of content creation for digital platforms. The dual skill set of performance and production is increasingly valuable in an industry where artists who understand both sides of the process are better placed to navigate independent and commercial careers. Many graduates also pursue further training or postgraduate study in music, theatre, or production.
