BA Musical Theatre
About this course
Musical theatre sits at the intersection of singing, acting, and dance, demanding equal fluency in all three disciplines while requiring performers to fuse them seamlessly in service of storytelling. It is a form that has evolved from the operettas and vaudeville traditions of the nineteenth century into a global industry spanning the West End, Broadway, film, television, and site-specific performance. Training for it means developing technical precision alongside the creative flexibility to devise original work, respond to a director's vision, and collaborate across artistic boundaries. At York St John University this three-year full-time programme trains you to perform and create musical theatre, building your vocal technique, movement vocabulary, and acting craft in an integrated way. You will devise new work as well as interpreting existing repertoire, and you will collaborate with students from the university's music and theatre courses, gaining experience of the kind of cross-disciplinary teamwork professional production demands. The course includes a placement year and a year abroad, giving you direct industry exposure and the opportunity to study in an international context, broadening your perspective on how musical theatre is made and received around the world. Work placement opportunities are also built into the programme. Graduates typically pursue performance careers in theatre, touring productions, cruise ships, corporate entertainment, television, and film, or move into related areas such as choreography, directing, drama facilitation, arts administration, and community arts. The skills developed across this degree, including collaborative creativity, disciplined practice, and communication, also transfer into education, media, and events management.
