Musical theatre is a discipline that asks its practitioners to master three distinct performing arts simultaneously: singing with strength and expressivity, acting with emotional truth and textual intelligence, and dancing with physical precision and theatrical flair. The integration of these three crafts into a single coherent performance is what distinguishes musical theatre from its component parts, and achieving it requires sustained, intensive, and collaborative training. At York St John University, this part-time programme trains you to perform and create musical theatre, developing your skills across all three performance disciplines while also cultivating the creative and professional mindset needed for a career in the industry. You will devise new work and collaborate with students from music and theatre, reflecting the collaborative reality of professional musical theatre production. The programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you substantial real-world and international performance experience as part of the course. You will develop as both an interpreter of established work and a creator of new material, building the versatility that professional theatre demands. Graduates of musical theatre programmes pursue careers as performers in professional theatre, touring shows, cruise ships, theme parks, and television. Many also develop portfolios that span teaching, choreography, directing, arts education, and community performance work.
