MA Music/Theology & Religious Studies
About this course
Music and Theology and Religious Studies is a pairing that reflects a deep and historically significant connection between the two subjects. Sacred music has been one of the most significant drivers of musical development in the Western tradition, and the relationship between music, worship and religious experience runs through virtually every musical culture in the world. At the same time, theology and religious studies examines the beliefs, practices, texts and institutions through which human beings have sought to understand the divine and the ultimate questions of existence, and music is one of the most powerful expressions of that search. Studying them together creates an intellectually rich and unusual combination. At the University of Glasgow this part-time degree gives you a range of options in both music and theology and religious studies across all years, allowing you to design a pathway that reflects your own interests and strengths. Your music study will engage with the technical, cultural, historical and philosophical questions the discipline opens up, developing practical experience alongside critical and analytical understanding. Your theology and religious studies work will range across different traditions and questions, from biblical studies and Christian thought to comparative religion and the philosophy of religion. The degree includes a year abroad option. Graduates from Music and Theology and Religious Studies degrees go on to careers in music education, chaplaincy, community music, arts management, religious broadcasting, journalism and the voluntary sector. The combination also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in music, theology, religious studies, philosophy of religion or related disciplines, and the broad critical and analytical skills it develops are valued across many professional and academic contexts.
