About this course

Neuroscience is the scientific study of the brain and nervous system, encompassing the molecular and cellular processes that make neurons function, the circuit-level dynamics that produce perception and movement, and the systems-level questions of how we learn, remember, feel, and think. Artificial intelligence, at its most principled, draws deeply on understanding of how biological brains process information, and the relationship runs in both directions: neuroscience increasingly uses computational methods and machine learning tools to make sense of complex neural data. Combining these disciplines creates a degree with genuine intellectual coherence and significant practical relevance. At Keele this three-year full-time programme explores how the brain works while equipping you with expertise in programming, machine learning, data analysis, and research. You will develop a grounding in the neuroscientific underpinnings of brain function alongside the computational and technical skills that allow you to work with complex data and build intelligent systems. The combination of biological understanding and technical fluency prepares you for roles in an area that is growing rapidly as healthcare, biotechnology, and technology companies increasingly look for people who can bridge these fields. The programme includes a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to spend time in a professional environment, and a year abroad at an international partner institution. Work placements are integrated throughout, ensuring that the connection between academic learning and professional practice runs across the whole degree. Graduates are well placed for careers in neuroscience research, biotech and healthcare, data science, clinical technology, brain-computer interface development, and artificial intelligence. Many continue to postgraduate study in neuroscience, computational neuroscience, data science, or related fields, building towards research or specialist professional careers in one of the most rapidly advancing areas of science and technology.
