MSci Nursing (Adult And Learning Disabilities)
About this course
Dual field nursing in adult and learning disabilities is an advanced and demanding route into professional practice that qualifies you to work across two distinct and important areas of nursing care. Adult nursing focuses on the care of people from late adolescence through to old age across acute, community, and specialist settings, while learning disabilities nursing is a highly person-centred field concerned with supporting people with a range of cognitive and developmental disabilities to live well and with dignity. Training in both fields gives you a breadth of clinical and relational skills that very few nurses possess. This four-year full-time programme at Edge Hill University is a dual field Master's level degree, which means you will develop both the clinical competences and the leadership capabilities associated with advanced nursing practice. You will benefit from extensive practice opportunities throughout the programme, spending significant time in real clinical environments across both fields where you will apply your learning under professional supervision. On successful completion, you will be eligible to register as a qualified nurse in two fields with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, giving you a genuinely rare and versatile professional qualification. The career opportunities available to dual field nurses are wide. You may work in acute hospital settings, community services, residential care, specialist learning disability teams, supported living environments, or healthcare commissioning. Leadership and management roles, clinical specialist positions, and educational roles in nurse training are all realistic progressions. The Master's level foundation of the programme also supports postgraduate research, and the dual registration gives you flexibility to move between specialisms throughout your career in ways that single-field registration does not.
